Festival – January 24 at Sunset Beach

Recap: Friedman Adventures Surf Fishing

What an incredible day it was on January 24 at Sunset Beach, California! We hosted another fantastic Friedman Adventures Surf Fishing Festival from 9 AM to 12 noon, and the turnout was amazing—over 100 enthusiastic anglers and outdoor lovers joined us. The fishing was a mixed bag, with some folks reeling in solid catches while others experienced a slower pace. Highlights included small bar perch, walleye perch, a few short halibut, and some rays, all under an absolutely beautiful Southern California sky. It’s moments like these that make us feel so blessed to call SoCal home, especially when so many other Americans are enduring a tough winter.

The real star of the show? The people! Everyone who came out was truly fantastic, creating a warm and welcoming vibe. A huge shoutout goes to the gentlemen who kicked things off right by bringing donuts and coffee: Pedro Pino, Chivo, Doug Tilk, and Chris from http://SoCalReels.com. If you’re in need of reel repairs, I highly recommend reaching out to Chris—he’s top-notch. Thanks to their generosity, everybody was able to dine on delicious donuts and fuel up for the morning’s adventures.

We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to our extraordinary greeter, Lucky. For all he does to make Friedman Adventures events so special, Lucky was the well-deserved recipient of a brand-new, beautiful Penn rod and reel. We can’t thank him enough for his dedication and positive energy—he truly elevates every gathering.

The event was filled with heartwarming scenes: so many father-son and father-daughter teams, along with groups of good friends, all sharing laughs and making memories. Whether you were casting lines or just soaking in the atmosphere, it was a really great time for everyone involved.

For those looking to up their surf fishing game, the standout rig of the day was a Carolina rig setup with 8-pound fluorocarbon line, a half-ounce sliding egg sinker, and Berkeley Gulp Camo worm bait. Freeze-dried lugworms also proved very effective. Pro tip: You can stock up on all the great bait and tackle you’ll need for Southern California surf fishing at Big Fish Bait and Tackle, conveniently located at the corner of Seal Beach Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway.

Looking ahead, we’ve got two more Surf Fishing Festivals scheduled in the coming months. Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 21, at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Anderson Street from 9 AM to 12 noon. Then, join us on March 22 at the same spot and time—this one doubles as Philip Friedman’s birthday celebration! Last year, over 200 people showed up, and it’s a perfect opportunity for Phil to personally thank each and every one of you for your support of Friedman Adventures.

These events are all about family fun, and everyone is invited—whether you’re an avid angler, prefer a leisurely beach walk, or just want to grab a cup of coffee and a donut. You’ll find some truly generous and good-hearted people here, making every gathering memorable. We can’t wait to see you at the next one!
